Uganda Law Society Pledges Justice for Kyagulanyi Family Following Security Withdrawal

ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde and General Secretary Babu Ssali

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice and accountability for the family of Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, following the withdrawal of security forces from his residence after a 68-day deployment.

Despite the end of the prolonged security presence at Kyagulanyi’s home, ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde and General Secretary Babu Ssali emphasized that the Society’s pursuit of justice remains unwavering.

The ULS outlined a three-pronged approach: petitioning the courts to challenge the legality of the house arrest—a case already filed at the Kasangati Chief Magistrate’s Court; launching an independent investigation to secure compensation and remedies for the family; and convening a national dialogue to address broader concerns such as systemic repression, enforced disappearances, and political persecution. These efforts underscore the Society’s constitutional mandate to uphold the rule of law and protect human rights.

Kyagulanyi, the leader of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), is currently abroad engaging with international stakeholders, including officials in Washington, at the Geneva Summit, and with the European Union, to raise concerns about the integrity of the recent presidential election. In his absence, he appointed Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru as acting president of the party.
