Government Confirms No Agreement Yet on Reopening Facebook in Uganda

Minister of State for Information, Communication and Technology, Godfrey Kabyanga Baluku

The government has confirmed that no agreement has been reached on the reopening of Facebook in Uganda, despite years of ongoing engagements.

Since the 2021 general elections, Facebook has remained blocked in the country, with authorities citing various breaches by the platform’s owners.

Speaking to the press at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, Minister of State for Information, Communication and Technology, Godfrey Kabyanga Baluku, acknowledged that many Ugandans want the ban lifted. However, he stressed that unresolved issues with Facebook continue to prevent its return, despite four years of dialogue.

The minister’s comments come ahead of the upcoming Chief Level Executive Conference scheduled for 24th April in Kampala under the theme “The CIO as a Business Strategist.”

In December 2025, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni hinted at the possibility of reopening Facebook, noting that the country had thrived without the platform but recognizing the need to move forward.

Meanwhile, digital influencers and marketers continue to press the government to lift the ban, citing its impact on business, communications, and digital engagement.
