A one-year-old child, Salson Nuwagaba, has died after being hit by a stray bullet during Monday’s shooting at Kiboga Government Prisons, raising the death toll to four.
The child had been rushed to Kiboga Hospital following the incident, but Medical Superintendent Dr. Asuman Kasujja confirmed on Tuesday that he succumbed to his injuries.
The shooting occurred when prison warder Moses Anguyo allegedly opened fire on his supervisors after being cautioned over the use of WhatsApp during working hours.
Anguyo reportedly shot dead Assistant Superintendent of Prisons Hope Catherine, who served as Deputy Officer in Charge, and Principal Officer One Bright Akishuri, the third-in-command at Kiboga Prisons.
Anguyo then allegedly attempted to locate the Officer in Charge but, finding him away, shot and killed his wife, Sarah Ayebare.
During the attack, Nuwagaba, Ayebare’s son, was struck by a stray bullet.
Uganda Prisons Service spokesperson Frank Baine Mayanja said burial arrangements are underway for Thursday.
Akishuri will be buried in Kisoro, Hope Catherine in Rwampala, and Ayebare and the child in Kabale District.
The suspect remains at large. After the shooting, Anguyo reportedly fled to a nearby shop, abandoned his prison uniform, changed into civilian clothes, and disappeared into nearby bushes.
