Amputee Self-Help Network Uganda Calls for Establishment of Rescue and Emergency Points Along Highways

Charlotte Kangume, Co-founder of ASNU

The Amputee Self-Help Network Uganda (ASNU) has called for the establishment of rescue and emergency points along the country’s highways to help save the lives of accident victims.

In a presentation to the Parliamentary Health Committee, ASNU urged the government to enact policies and regulations that would facilitate the creation of such service centers.

These points, the organization argues, could significantly reduce fatalities by providing timely medical intervention at accident sites.

ASNU cited the recent tragic accident in Kiryandongo, which claimed the lives of over 40 people, suggesting that some victims might have survived if rescue and emergency points had been in place.

Charlotte Kangume, Co-founder of ASNU, and fellow survivor Joseph Asaba emphasized that reckless driving, particularly over-speeding, coupled with poor road infrastructure, contributes significantly to road accidents.

They argued that addressing these issues, alongside setting up emergency response systems, could save countless lives.
