Empowering Ugandan Youth: How Ubuntu 3 Festival Blends Sports, Culture, and Community

Ubuntu 3 Festival Blends Sports, Culture, and Community

In a groundbreaking approach to youth development, Sembeza Africa and Sports Uganda Limited has hosted the Ubuntu 3 Sports Festival of Culture and Conservation, a unique event that combines sports training with cultural celebration to empower children across Uganda.

Led by CEO Andrew Byekwaso, the festival showcased a collaborative effort to build a sports ecosystem rooted in community values and cultural pride.

Rather than focusing on trophies or competition, the festival celebrated leadership, integrity, and teamwork qualities essential for nurturing responsible young citizens.

Bringing together over 140 children from regions including Adjumani, Kabale, Entebbe, and Luweero, the event united sports clubs, schools, and foundations such as Kabale Queens Rugby, PlayOn Foundation, and the Entebbe Corporate League.

National athletes, including members of Uganda’s She Cranes netball team and cricket squad, volunteered to coach and mentor youth, alongside international experts.

“The festival is about more than sport,” explained Andrew Byekwaso. “It’s about creating a community that supports children’s growth, instills values, and connects culture with physical activity.”

A highlight of the event was the introduction of new sports like lacrosse and archery, broadening children’s horizons and offering fresh opportunities for engagement.

Cultural performances and community celebrations underscored the importance of preserving heritage alongside fostering athletic skills.

Derrick Ntege, Executive Director of the PlayOn Foundation, praised the initiative’s holistic approach. “Sports teach perseverance, respect, and teamwork. Combined with cultural understanding, these create a strong foundation for young people’s futures.”

With nearly 500 children expected to participate in upcoming sessions, organizers hope the Ubuntu 3 Festival will inspire schools and local authorities to prioritize sports as an integral part of education and community life.

This festival marks a hopeful step toward a future where Uganda’s youth thrive not only as athletes but as empowered members of their communities, carrying forward a legacy of culture and leadership.
