Electoral Commission Opens August 11 for Presidential Nomination Forms Ahead of 2026 Elections

Chairperson of EC Commission, Justice Simon Byabakama

The Electoral Commission has announced that the period from August 11 to September 10, 2025, has been set aside for the picking of expression of interest forms by individuals aspiring to contest the presidency in the upcoming 2026 general elections.

Justice Simon Byabakama, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, stated that the one-month window will provide sufficient time for all presidential hopefuls to gather the necessary requirements.

Among the key conditions set by the Commission are collecting supporting signatures from registered voters in at least 98 districts, verification of academic qualifications, and submission of all required documents two weeks prior to the nomination date.

Justice Byabakama urged all aspiring candidates to ensure they pick up the forms physically or through duly verified agents, especially those affiliated with political parties.

In addition to the presidential process, the Commission has adjusted timelines for other elective positions.

Local government nominations for district, city, and lord mayoral posts, along with councilors, will take place from September 3 to 5 at district commission offices.

Municipal and city councilors will be nominated between September 8 and 10 at respective city commission offices.

Sub-county, town, and municipal councilors and chairpersons will be nominated from September 11 to 24.

Parliamentary nominations, initially scheduled for mid-September, have been rescheduled to October 15 to 17.

Justice Byabakama clarified that positions not requiring academic qualifications, mainly at local government levels, will have forms collected physically at district offices starting August 11.

However, for roles demanding academic credentials, including parliamentary seats, forms must be downloaded online starting the same date.

These changes aim to streamline the Commission’s operations and ensure a more efficient nomination process.

Justice Byabakama concluded by urging all aspiring candidates and their supporters to refrain from acts of violence, citing past incidents during party primaries, and called for peaceful participation in the electoral process.
