Condolence book opened at Supreme Court for Late Justice Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba

The Judiciary has opened a condolence book at the Supreme Court in honor of the late Justice Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba (Rtd), a towering figure in Uganda’s legal fraternity.

According to a statement from the Judiciary posted on X (formerly Twitter), the condolence book will remain open to the public until he is laid to rest. “All are welcome to pay tribute to a distinguished jurist and legal scholar whose legacy shaped Uganda’s legal landscape,” the statement read.

Justice Kanyeihamba passed away earlier this week at Nakasero Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment.

Burial arrangements are underway, pending the return of his family members currently abroad.

Tributes have continued to pour in from members of the legal fraternity who either appeared before him at the Supreme Court or interacted with him during his illustrious career.

Senior Counsel Elison Karuhanga remembered Justice Kanyeihamba as a man of wit, often misunderstood for his bold demeanor. “He had a sense of humor that could easily be mistaken for arrogance,” he remarked.

Human rights lawyer Nicholas Opiyo, reflecting on his early days at Makerere Law School, praised the late professor as “a teacher, a jurist, a politician, and a courageous lawyer.” Opiyo recalled the days when Justice Kanyeihamba and his peers sat at the Supreme Court in Mengo, serving as beacons of justice and mentorship to emerging legal minds.

Justice Professor George Wilson Kanyeihamba leaves behind a profound legacy, having served not only in the Judiciary but also in academia and politics.

He was instrumental in shaping Uganda’s constitutional discourse and remains a revered figure in the country’s legal history.
