A private security guard was shot dead on Thursday evening during an armed robbery at A&B Supermarket near the Namugongo Catholic Shrine.
According to the supermarket’s owner, Brian Kayongo, the robbery was carried out by two armed assailants wielding guns and machetes.
The attackers ambushed Kayongo and his employees, held them at gunpoint, and in a span of just two minutes, seized cash from the counter before fleeing the scene.
A security guard from a nearby bar attempted to intervene and pursue the robbers, but was fatally shot.
The attackers also made off with the guard’s firearm.
Local area chairman Michael Ssendawala, who was among the first residents to respond, condemned the violent act and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend the suspects.
A team from Kira Division Police responded swiftly to the incident, but the assailants had already escaped.
Police investigations are ongoing.
