The Parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has summoned the Chief Engineer of Mulago National Referral Hospital, the project engineer, and members of the Contracts Committee from the Ministry of Works to explain the diversion of Shs2 billion meant for a contractor who has failed to fulfill his obligations.
The contractor was awarded a Shs30 billion project to construct 150 housing units for Mulago Hospital staff, which was expected to be completed and operational by the end of 2023.
During an interface with a delegation from Mulago Hospital, led by Director Rose Mary Byanyima, the committee chaired by Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi discovered that the construction site had been abandoned.
Materials left at the site are reportedly deteriorating and risk becoming unusable.
Those summoned include Julius Mukibi, the chief contractor, and Levi Katushabe, the project engineer.
Hon. Muwanga warned that the government is facing a potential financial loss and emphasized that the summoned individuals must provide compelling reasons why they should not be held accountable or even prosecuted for failure to deliver on the project.
