The Democratic Party (DP) has officially opened the nomination window for members interested in contesting various party positions, starting from July 3 to July 15, 2025.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, DP Secretary General Gerald Siranda announced that nomination forms will be available to all party members seeking to run for different positions except for the office of the party president, which will be filled through the upcoming delegates’ conference.
In a strategic move to foster unity and minimize internal conflict, Siranda revealed that all incumbent DP Members of Parliament will be allowed to stand unopposed.
He explained that the decision is intended to reduce infighting within the party ranks and allow the leadership to focus on broader organizational goals ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“To promote internal harmony and party stability, we’ve agreed that sitting MPs will not be challenged during this phase. It’s time to focus on strengthening the Democratic Party across the country,” Siranda said.
He further clarified that while nomination forms will be issued free of charge, those returning forms for MP and LC V chairperson positions will be required to pay a fee of UGX 200,000.
Siranda also addressed concerns raised during the recent delegates’ conference in Mbarara, noting that the internal disagreements have since been resolved.
“We are united now, and that is why we are giving an open platform to leaders such as Hon. Richard Ssebamala, Hon. Lulume Bayiga, and others to contest and lead efforts to grow the party,” he added.
The DP is expected to release a final list of vetted and nominated candidates following the close of the nomination period on July 15.
