Taxi drivers have declared they will not pay fines issued under the Express Penalty System (EPS Auto) until President Yoweri Museveni addresses what they describe as an unfair system.
Their response comes after news that EPS Auto will only be suspended for one month, during which all previously issued fines must still be paid.
During his budget speech at Kololo, President Museveni emphasized that the purpose of digital number plates and the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) is to enhance national security not to generate revenue through excessive traffic fines. He called for the system’s temporary suspension.
In Kampala, Muhammad Ssempijja, a leader of taxi drivers at Namayiba Taxi Park, said the President’s directive should be treated as law.
He stressed that no authority should reinstate EPS Auto without Museveni’s clear approval.
He added that as leaders, they will not support any action that contradicts the President’s stance.
