Court grants bail to five Opposition Activists on public nuisance charges

Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura(extreme Left), Ingrid Turinawe(second last from right) and 3 granted bail

Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya of Buganda Road Court has granted non-cash bail of UGX 500,000 to five opposition activists who have been on remand since February 17, 2025.

The court also ordered their sureties to sign a non-cash bond of UGX 1 million and ensure that the accused appear in court again on April 23, 2025.

The activists granted bail includes Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, Ingrid Turinawe, Faridah Nangonzi, Shadiya Namubiiru, and Phionah Kabayinza.

They were arrested and charged with public nuisance after their involvement in a protest in Kampalademanding the release of Dr. Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale, both of whom had been detained by authorities.

The protest took place on February 17, 2025, and was part of ongoing political activism in the country.

The charges stem from the activists’ participation in demonstrations, which authorities deemed unlawful, resulting in the public nuisance charges.

The prosecution has argued that the protest disrupted the peace and order in the area.

After the court session, defense lawyer Samuel Wanda raised concerns over the slow pace of investigations, criticizing the state for delays that, in his view, are hindering the timely resolution of the case.

Wanda emphasized the need for more efficiency in handling the case.

The court’s decision to grant bail has sparked mixed reactions, with opposition members praising the ruling, while others express concerns over the ongoing judicial and political pressures the activists may face.

The case continues to draw attention, especially as the activists prepare to return to court in April, and as their supporters rally for their release.
