The High Court in Hoima has set October 1, 2026, for the hearing of a petition challenging the election of Asinansi Nyakato as the Hoima City Woman Member of Parliament.

During Wednesday’s court session, Nyakato’s lawyers, led by Medard Lubega Sseggona, asked the court to allow them to file additional affidavits in support of those already on record.

Justice Charles Kasibayo, who is handling election petitions in Hoima, granted the request but directed the legal team to file the additional affidavits within the stipulated time to allow both sides adequate time to prepare for the hearing.

Justice Kasibayo also noted that the parties still have an opportunity to reconcile and inform the court of their position when the matter comes up on October 1.

Sseggona said the additional time would enable Nyakato’s legal team to prepare her defence, adding that they are ready to defend her victory.

Meanwhile, Hamphrey Tumwesigye of Mujulizi and Company Advocates, representing the petitioner Mugenyi, told court that they had served Nyakato and the Electoral Commission with 86 affidavits but had not received responses.

Tumwesigye said the petitioners are ready for the hearing to commence on October 1.

Speaking to journalists after the session, Nyakato expressed confidence that the court would uphold her election, insisting that she won genuinely and that she has evidence to support her victory.

Meanwhile, in the Bukimbiri election petition proceedings, Justice Farouk Lubega has barred live media coverage and recording of proceedings in the two petitions challenging the election of Bukimbiri County MP Eddie Kwizera Wagahu.

The court’s decision means journalists will not be allowed to broadcast or record the proceedings as the petitions are heard.
