The Katikiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has commended Rotarians for their efforts to improve healthcare standards in Uganda, particularly in the fight against cancer.
Mayiga made the remarks while meeting Rotarians who paid a courtesy visit to Bulange Mengo ahead of the Rotary Cancer Run scheduled for Sunday, August 30, 2026.
He said access to quality healthcare is critical to Uganda’s social development and requires strong leadership and collective efforts.
He commended the Rotary movement for addressing health challenges and other issues of national importance.
The Chairperson of the 2026 Rotary Cancer Run, Med Lutaaya, said proceeds from this year’s event will support the completion and equipping of the cancer treatment centre at St. Francis Hospital Nsambya.
Lutaaya called on Ugandans to support the initiative, stressing that the fight against cancer requires collective action. He said Uganda records approximately 36,000 new cancer cases annually.
According to Lutaaya, this year’s campaign aims to raise Shs5 billion, which will be used to purchase a Linear Accelerator (LINAC) machine to enhance cancer treatment.
The ongoing construction of a one-stop cancer treatment centre at Nsambya is expected to accommodate two linear accelerator machines, with the project estimated to cost Shs14 billion. About Shs8 billion has already been raised towards the project.
The Rotary Cancer Run is expected to bring together thousands of Ugandans in support of efforts to strengthen cancer treatment and improve access to specialised care in the country.
