Residents and a housemaid in Kalungu Bunga, Ggaba, Makindye Division, say a family dispute over a husband’s alleged marriage to another wife preceded the stabbing of five children, two of whom died.
Dorothy Namayo, 43, a Kenyan national, is alleged to have stabbed her five children at their home in Kalungu Bunga early this morning, killing two and critically injuring three others.
Police identified the deceased as Khadija Daizy, 14, who died instantly in her bedroom, and Hawa Dalena, 7, who later succumbed to her injuries at Nsambya Hospital, where she had been rushed for treatment.
The three surviving children, aged 13, 8 and 5, sustained injuries and are receiving medical treatment.
Mariam Saana, the family’s housemaid, told police that she woke up at about 5:00 a.m. after hearing noise coming from the main house, which is opposite her boys’ quarters.
When she opened the door, Saana said she saw a car on fire outside the house and one of the children at a window calling for help. The child reportedly told her that their mother had stabbed all of them before going outside.
Saana said she attempted to access the main house but discovered that the lock had been changed and the gate had also been secured with a new padlock.
She raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who broke down the gate and forced open the main door, which had reportedly been locked from inside. They then forced open the children’s room and rescued the injured children.
The children were initially rushed in a police patrol vehicle to a clinic in Ggaba before being referred to Nsambya Hospital for further treatment.
According to Saana, tensions in the family had escalated shortly before the incident when Ederisa Troy, a Malian national and husband to the suspect, reportedly returned home distressed and got into a confrontation with his wife.
Saana told police that Namayo accused her husband of infidelity and told him to return to his other wife.
The children reportedly contacted one of their father’s friends, who came to the home and intervened. The situation later calmed down and the husband left.
The family dispute is reportedly linked to events that began in May this year, when Troy allegedly took a second wife after expressing a desire to have sons, as Namayo had only daughters.
By press time, police officers from Kabalagala Police Station were still combing the scene as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident continued.
