Government Reinstates Facilitation for Private Medical Interns

Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi

Government has suspended its policy that barred privately sponsored medical interns from receiving facilitation during their training.

Speaking to Parliament today, Minister of Health Dr. Chris Baryomunsi revealed that Cabinet yesterday resolved to suspend the controversial clause and reinstate facilitation for all medical interns, regardless of whether they are government- or privately sponsored.

The decision follows last year’s introduction of a medical internship policy under which facilitation was limited to government-sponsored medical interns, excluding those trained at private institutions.

The policy sparked an industrial action by medical interns who protested the exclusion.

Under the reinstated arrangement, each medical intern will receive a monthly facilitation of Shs1.2 million before tax, translating to approximately Shs1 million after tax.

Dr. Baryomunsi also disclosed that Cabinet has directed the Ministry of Health to prepare a comprehensive report on Uganda’s health workforce, including the issue of dual employment among medical workers.

The report is expected to be presented to Cabinet within six months.
