Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has approved nine private waste collection companies to collect garbage in nine constituencies across the city at fees ranging from 1,000 to 3,000 shillings.
Eight of the companies have already obtained operational permits from KCCA and have a combined capacity to collect 1,469 tonnes of waste per day. The ninth company, which will serve Lubaga North, is expected to begin operations once the necessary legal processes are completed.
Addressing the press at City Hall, KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki said the addition of the private collectors to existing waste management companies would increase the city’s capacity to evacuate garbage in a timely manner.
The approved companies are Nabugabo Updeal Joint Venture, which is zoned for Central; Hill Top Enterprise Limited for Kawempe South; Yowaste Limited for Kawempe North; MTSL Energies Limited for Lubaga South; Bigseal Holdings Limited for Makindye East; Biohaz Waste for Makindye West; Ecoserv Limited for Nakawa West; and De Waste Uganda Limited for Nakawa East.
Buzeki said the approved rates are 1,000 shillings per 50-kilogramme bag in informal settlements and 3,000 shillings per 50-kilogramme bag for other domestic households.
Commercial premises will also pay 3,000 shillings, while institutions such as churches, mosques, schools and temples will pay 40,000 shillings per load.
She noted that the rates were approved by the KCCA Council in October 2024 and apply to routine waste collection across Kampala.
Buzeki said KCCA is making efforts to ensure that waste is cleared from the city ahead of the National Cleaning Day scheduled for 29 August 2026.
