The Uganda Police Force has announced heightened security deployment across the country as Ugandans prepare to elect Local Council II (LCII) chairpersons this week, following several incidents of violence reported during the recently concluded Local Council I (LCI) elections.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said police arrested 150 suspects in connection with election-related offences committed between 29 July and 1 August 2026.
According to Kawala, 78 of the suspects have since been arraigned in court, while others were cautioned and released, and some remain under investigation.
She cited an incident in Nama Sub-county, Mukono District, where two suspects, Musa Kiwanuka and Muhammad Mutebi, were arrested over the alleged murder of a female resident.
Police say the victim was attacked and beaten to death after standing behind her preferred LCI chairperson candidate during the voting process, contrary to the wishes of the suspects.
Kawala also highlighted another incident in Kalagala Village, Mukono District, where a resident reportedly lost four goats after allegedly being targeted for supporting a candidate who was defeated in the election.
She urged the public to refrain from violence, intimidation, and acts of retaliation during the LCII elections, emphasizing that every eligible voter has the constitutional right to support and vote for the candidate of their choice without fear of harassment or victimization.
