The High Court in Kampala has adjourned the treason case involving retired Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye to Tuesday, August 4, 2026, following concerns over his health.
The decision came after the defense, led by Counsel Sylvia Namawejje, informed the court that Besigye remains hospitalized and is unable to attend the proceedings.
The court resumed hearing the case at around 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, with only two of the accused persons—Hajj Obeid Lutale and UPDF Captain Denis Oola Oyar—present.
The prosecution, led by Counsel Thomas Jatiko, told the court it was ready to proceed with its first witness, Wilson Andrew, also known as Orlando, who was present in court.
During the proceedings, Hajj Obeid Lutale expressed his desire for justice and a fair trial, telling the court that he had not consented to representation by any lawyer.
He maintained that he remained without legal representation despite the appointment of state defense counsel.
Presiding Judge Justice Emmanuel Baguma informed the court that he had received a letter from Luzira Prison confirming that Dr. Besigye was absent because he remains admitted to Mulago National Referral Hospital.
Counsel Sylvia Namawejje requested that the matter be adjourned until Besigye is well enough to personally attend the trial, stressing that his presence is essential to the proceedings.
Justice Baguma granted the application and adjourned the case to Tuesday, August 4, 2026.
