The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has called on its supporters to set aside their differences and remain united as Ugandans head to the polls for the Local Council I (LC I) village elections.
Speaking at the party headquarters in Kampala, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Dr. Tanga Odoi urged party members and the general public to participate in the elections, describing the exercise as a significant milestone in Uganda’s democratic process.
He encouraged eligible voters to rally behind NRM flag bearers, expressing confidence that the party would secure a decisive victory across the country.
Dr. Odoi said the elections provide citizens with an opportunity to choose leaders who will represent their interests at the grassroots level and play a key role in implementing government programmes within their communities.
A total of 71,214 LC I chairpersons are expected to be elected across Uganda.
After being declared winners, the elected chairpersons will appoint members of their executive committees, including the vice chairperson, who also serves as Secretary for Children’s Welfare, the General Secretary, Secretary for Security, Secretary for Information, Education and Mobilization, Secretary for Finance, and Secretary for Production and Environmental Protection.
The positions of Chairpersons for Youth, Persons with Disabilities, Older Persons and Women have already been filled through their respective Electoral College elections.
According to the Electoral Commission, polling will begin at 7:00 a.m. with the assembly of voters, followed by voter education between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
Voting will then take place using the lining-up method from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., after which successful candidates will be declared and their details entered into Electoral Commission forms for official records and further management.
The LC I elections, scheduled for July 28, 2026, will be conducted simultaneously across the country and will be followed by the LC II elections at a later date.
The village polls are expected to fill the country’s 71,214 grassroots leadership positions, which form the foundation of Uganda’s local governance system.
