The Bishop Emeritus of Lugazi Diocese Rt. Rev. Mathias Ssekamanya has hailed Ugandans for embracing the National cleaning exercise introduced by the government.
On July 23rd 2026 the Government through the Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja announced the National Cleaning Days Initiative, declaring the last Saturday of every month as a mandatory community work day. During this time, all businesses must close and vehicle movement is restricted for three hours 7am to 10am.
Now Bishop Ssekamanya while at Lugazi Cathedral for this year’s Priestly ordinations challenged the congregation not only clean the community around them but purify their hearts for they are the temple of God.
He specifically urged the women to lead by example in this cleanliness.
The exercise locally known as Bulungi Bwansi – was enforced by the security personnel who restricted Vehicle movement, motor cycles and bicycles for the three hours. The police and UPDF officers led the communities in the cleaning exercise.
The rubbish was later burnt along roads and streets in the residential areas while within the town areas garbage trucks moved to collect the skips of collected rubbish and transported it to the gazatted areas for dumping.
However the National Cleaning Day exercise the first of the kind held on 25th July 2026 caught many by surprise and caused traffic Jam along the roads for the cars and Lorries carrying goods.
