Police in Nakaseke District have arrested nine suspects accused of transporting suspected stolen livestock after intercepting two FUSO trucks carrying more than 50 animals.
The suspects were identified as Vincent Sebuuma, Brian Lukwago, Vincent Brian, Vincent Ssentongo, Vincent Ssennyondo, Peter Sebagala, Benon Tumuhaire, Jamil Kyazze, Sam Mulindwa, and Ismail Wandiba.
The suspects were intercepted along the Kapeeka–Semuto Road during an intelligence-led operation while travelling in FUSO trucks registered UBP 242T and UBN 758D.
Police recovered 40 cattle, 12 goats, and eight sheep from the two trucks after officers found inconsistencies between the animals being transported and the details indicated on their movement permits.
According to police, one of the trucks was carrying 23 cattle, four goats, and two sheep, despite being authorised to transport only 19 cattle.
The second truck had 17 cattle, eight goats, and six sheep, although its permit allowed for only 12 cattle. Neither permit included authorisation for transporting goats or sheep.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the permits stated the animals had been loaded from Ngoma Cattle Market.
Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima said the suspects and the recovered animals were taken to Nakaseke Central Police Station as investigations into the matter continue.
Police say further inquiries will establish the ownership of the animals and determine whether the suspects will face charges related to livestock theft and illegal transportation.
