Lukwago’s Misprision of Treason Case Adjourned as He Seeks Urgent Medical Treatment

Former Kampala Lord Mayor and People's Front for Freedom (PFF) leader Erias Lukwago

The case in which former Kampala Lord Mayor and People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) leader Erias Lukwago is charged with misprision of treason has been adjourned to July 16, 2026.

Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by Grade One Magistrate Aidah Nanjala, adjourned the matter after the trial magistrate, Chief Magistrate Sarah Basemera, was unable to hear the case due to illness.

Before the adjournment, Lukwago, who appeared virtually from Luzira Prison, made an emotional appeal to the court, asking for urgent medical intervention.

He said his deteriorating health and the conditions in prison had left him fearing for his life.

Lukwago told the court that a team of specialists at Mulago National Referral Hospital had diagnosed him with five chronic health conditions, including a herniated disc that requires urgent assessment by neurosurgeons in India, where he previously underwent cervical spine surgery in 2024.

Medical recommendations presented before the court indicate that Lukwago should be kept in a well-ventilated environment, undergo further cervical spine treatment, and receive additional investigations for a lower oesophageal condition suspected to be cancer, among other health concerns.

His lead counsel, Medard Ssegona, urged the court to expedite arrangements for specialized treatment, arguing that the latest medical report points to conditions requiring immediate attention, particularly the herniated disc.

Ssegona also criticized Lukwago’s continued detention, saying his worsening health makes his continued stay in prison inappropriate.

The case will resume on July 16, 2026.
