Teachers under their umbrella body, the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), have welcomed the government’s decision to increase their salaries, describing it as a positive step towards addressing a long-standing demand dating back to the 2018/19 financial year.
Public Service Minister Gen Edward Katumba Wamala announced the salary enhancement yesterday, saying the new pay structure will take effect in the current financial year.
Speaking after the announcement, UNATU Secretary General Filbert Baguma welcomed the increment but noted that it remains modest, particularly for arts teachers who have continued to press for salary enhancements.
Baguma said arts teachers will continue to serve despite the challenges but urged the government to honour its commitment to harmonise salaries between arts and science teachers.
He said achieving equal pay for teachers would promote fairness and restore respect for the teaching profession.
