Hundreds of mourners, alongside members of the clergy and the family of the late Rev. Fr. Viatory Muvunyi, gathered this morning at Kisubi Minor Seminary for his final funeral service.
The Requiem Mass was presided over by the Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace Paul Ssemogerere, and concelebrated by Archbishop Augustine Kasujja, the Apostolic Nuncio, Vicar General Msgr. Rogers Mukasa Kabuye, and numerous priests from within and outside the Kampala Archdiocese.
In his homily, Archbishop Ssemogerere paid tribute to Fr. Muvunyi, describing him as a devoted servant of God whose commitment to the priesthood was evident in his prayer life, pastoral dedication, and carefully prepared homilies despite his short ministry.
He noted that Fr. Muvunyi began experiencing serious health challenges after being posted to Uganda Martyrs National Major Seminary Alokolum in Gulu Archdiocese. The Archbishop said he was later brought back and placed under his care for further treatment until his passing at the age of 37.
Fr. Muvunyi, born in 1992 in Kiziba Parish, Kampala Archdiocese, was ordained in 2026 as part of the group often referred to as the “COVID priests” and among the first priests ordained under Archbishop Ssemogerere’s leadership in Kampala.
During his ministry, he served at Our Lady and St. Jude Naggulu Parish and later at Mitala Maria Parish, where he was remembered for his pastoral zeal and commitment to evangelization.
His passing has been described by fellow clergy as a loss of a young priest who served with courage, faith, and dedication.
