The Ministry of East African Community Affairs plans to establish two new border points along the Uganda–Kenya border in a move aimed at easing congestion and improving cross-border trade.
The announcement was made by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs Rebecca Kadaga shortly after her appearance before Parliament’s Appointments Committee for vetting.
The committee was chaired by Speaker Jacob Oulanyah Oboth-Oboth and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa.
Kadaga said the proposed border points at Bulwada and Buteebe are expected to reduce delays in the clearance of goods and services currently experienced at the busy Busia border crossing, one of the country’s key trade gateways.
She noted that expanding border infrastructure will enhance trade efficiency, facilitate the movement of people and goods, and strengthen regional integration efforts within the East African Community.
Looking ahead, Kadaga pledged to prioritize the implementation of the East African single currency and advance the region’s political integration agenda during her five-year term in office.
Meanwhile, Parliament’s Appointments Committee continued vetting ministerial nominees on the final day of the exercise. Among those appearing before the committee were State Minister for Minerals Phiona Nyamutoro, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Haruna Kasolo, and State Minister for Planning Amos Lugolobi, among others.
The vetting exercise is part of the constitutional process required before ministerial nominees can formally assume office.
