Kasese Bishop Calls for Prayer as Ebola Halts Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations

The Bishop of Kasese Diocese, Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira

The Bishop of Kasese Diocese, Rt. Rev. Francis Aquirinus Kibira, has urged Christians to remain steadfast in prayer for an end to the Ebola outbreak that has disrupted this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.

The call comes after President Yoweri Museveni suspended the 2026 Namugongo Martyrs Day celebrations, which were scheduled to be led by Kasese Diocese, following concerns over the ongoing Ebola situation in the country.

Bishop Kibira made the remarks today after presiding over Mass at Mapeera House in Kampala, where Centenary Bank handed over a donation of UGX 70 million in cash, along with additional in-kind support worth UGX 68 million, towards preparations for the June 3rd celebrations.

He noted that preparations for the annual pilgrimage had already reached their final stages before the suspension was announced. He also confirmed that pilgrims who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo have since been advised to return home until further notice.

The Bishop emphasized the importance of prayer during this difficult period, expressing hope that the situation will improve and allow the resumption of normal religious activities.

He further encouraged Christians across the country to observe this year’s Martyrs Day from their respective dioceses, in line with guidance from the Uganda Episcopal Conference.

Meanwhile, Centenary Bank Executive Director Joseph Balikudembe said the bank’s contribution is part of its corporate social responsibility, noting that it is an annual commitment to dioceses responsible for leading Martyrs Day celebrations.
