Church of Uganda Backs Postponement of 2026 Uganda Martyrs Day Celebrations Over Ebola

The Church of Uganda has welcomed the government’s decision to postpone the 2026 Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine over fears of a possible Ebola outbreak linked to neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a statement issued on May 18, the Church said the decision followed consultations between the Government of Uganda, national epidemic response authorities, and religious leaders.

Provincial Secretary Reverend Canon William Ongeng said the Church fully supports the directive, emphasizing that protecting human life and public safety must take priority despite the significance of the annual Christian celebration.

The Church has urged Christians, dioceses, pilgrims, and organizing committees across the country to cooperate with the new measures and strictly observe health and safety guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health Uganda.

Church leaders also commended Uganda Christian University, which had been selected to organize this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at the Anglican site in Nakiyanja, for the commitment and resources already invested in preparations.

The Church of Uganda further assured believers that it will continue engaging government and health authorities on possible alternative arrangements for commemorating Uganda Martyrs Day safely and responsibly.
