The swearing-in ceremony for newly elected Members of Uganda’s 12th Parliament entered its second phase today at the Parliamentary Building in Kampala, marking the beginning of a new five-year legislative term.
The three-day exercise, which commenced on Wednesday, 13 May 2026, will run until Friday, 15 May 2026, with more than 500 Members of Parliament expected to take the Oath of Allegiance and the Oath of Member of Parliament in alphabetical order to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
By midday, 97 MPs had been sworn in out of the 176 legislators scheduled to take oath on the first day.
Among those sworn in was the newly elected Woman MP for Katakwi District and former Vice President of Uganda, Jessica Alupo, who pledged to prioritize service delivery and poverty eradication through wealth creation initiatives in her constituency.
Meanwhile, former Minister for the Presidency and Budiope West MP, Milly Babalanda, vowed to intensify efforts against child pregnancies in the Busoga region, noting that the vice continues to undermine girls’ education and development.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to supporting President Yoweri Museveni’s Parish Development Model (PDM) programme as a strategy for improving household incomes and transforming communities.
As early as 7:00 a.m., the usually tight-security surroundings of Uganda’s Parliament transformed into a vibrant scene of celebration and political transition as Members of Parliament-elect arrived in colourful processions accompanied by family members, supporters, relatives, and friends.
The legislators-elect begin a crucial five-year journey that is expected to shape Uganda’s governance, accountability, and democratic direction through 2031.
The ceremony officially commenced at 8:00 a.m. under strict parliamentary protocol, with the Clerk to Parliament, Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, reading the presidential proclamation convening the new Parliament and citing the constitutional provisions authorizing him to administer the oaths.
Daily sessions are scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., followed by a 30-minute break before resuming from 2:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. until the exercise concludes on Friday.
