Police have arrested a bodyguard attached to the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, following a shooting incident that left a female driver injured near her residence on MacKinnon Road in Kampala.
Security sources identified the suspect as Corporal Humphrey Muhanguzi, who allegedly opened fire on a woman driving a Toyota Harrier after she reportedly failed to give way to the Speaker’s convoy.
However, other accounts suggest the officer accused the victim who was returning from prayers at All Saints Cathedral Nakasero of using a route restricted to the Speaker’s residence.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Rachael Kawala, confirmed that the suspect is in custody and that the firearm used in the incident has been recovered. Investigations are ongoing.
The shooting has sparked widespread outrage on social media, with many Ugandans raising concerns over increasing cases of security personnel using excessive force against unarmed civilians, particularly in incidents involving convoy escorts.
Among those who reacted was State Minister for Yotuh and Children Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, who in a post on X commended police for swiftly arresting the suspect. He emphasized that it is that it is unjustifiable for security personnel to shoot at unarmed civilians over minor incidents.
Meanwhile, Joseph Sabiti, an aide to the Speaker, clarified that the incident occurred while she was away from her Kampala residence. He said upon her return from Bukedea, she was briefed by police and subsequently reached out to the victim’s family to offer support for medical treatment.
Speaker Among has since called on the police to expedite investigations to ensure justice is served.
