NEMA Orders Restoration of Cuda Wetland Amid Water Crisis Fears

NEMA’s Executive Director, Barirega Akankwasah

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has raised concern over the drying up of water sources in Northern Uganda, warning that continued misuse of wetlands could worsen the situation and affect vulnerable communities that rely on natural water sources.

This follows a restoration order issued to support the regeneration of the Cuda Wetland.

NEMA recently enforced directives against nursery bed operators who had encroached on the wetland in Nwoya District.

Reports indicate that water sources in areas surrounding Patuda Parish are gradually drying up, largely due to unsustainable human activities in and around wetlands.

After engagements between the NEMA board and local leaders in Patuda Village, nursery bed operators have been advised to relocate their activities further away from the wetland to prevent further degradation.

NEMA’s Executive Director, Barirega Akankwasah, warned that failure to comply within the stipulated time will result in strict enforcement measures, which may lead to losses for those affected.

The NEMA board is currently conducting site visits across Northern Uganda aimed at strengthening compliance, fostering collaboration with local communities, and enhancing awareness of environmental conservation practices.
