Ssenyonyi Questions Fast-Tracking of Protection and Sovereignty Bill

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi

The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, has raised concerns over the scheduling of the Protection and Sovereignty Bill, 2026, on the Order Paper before stakeholder consultations by the relevant parliamentary committee have begun.

The bill was tabled last week for its first reading and subsequently referred to the Committee on Internal Affairs for public participation.

However, it has now been unexpectedly listed for a second reading on today’s Order Paper.

Addressing Parliament, Ssenyonyi notified the Speaker, Anita Among, that the bill is yet to undergo the required consultation process and sought her guidance on the matter.

In response, Speaker Among stated that the bill’s placement on the Order Paper is intended to prompt the responsible committee to expedite its processing.
