Eleven people, including a police officer attached to Mukono Police Station, have died in a road crash that occurred early hours on Tuesday morning in Lwengo District along the Masaka–Mbarara Highway.
According to police, the accident happened at around 1:00 a.m. at Kalegeero junction, between Lyantonde and Lwengo district, and involved two motor vehicles: a bus belonging to Kasaba Coaches, which was heading for Kampala from Rukungiri district registration number UAL 492H, and a box body truck, registration number UBH 013Q.
According to Twaha Kasirye, the Greater Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, the bus veered off the road after it narrowly missed having a head-on collision with a lorry truck registration number UBH 013Q, which was moving in the opposite direction and killed 11 passengers on spot.
Two of the deceased so far identified include Ernest Abaho, a police officer attached to Mukono district, and Austin Kyomuhangi, a female passenger who was among the occupants of the bus.
At least 30 victims are still receiving treatment at Lyantonde district general hospital and Mbarara regional referral hospital, depending on the scale nature of the injuries sustained.
Traffic Police Spokesperson Michael Kananura confirmed that investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Kananura also revealed that police are investigating a separate road accident involving a single Sino truck.
The incident occurred in Rukole Swamp along the Buwama–Bunjako Beach road in Mpigi District which claimed an unspecified number of passengers.
Authorities say more details will be provided as investigations into both incidents progress.
