UPC Urges Government to Ensure Roadworthy Vehicles Amid Rising Accidents

UPC Spokesperson Sharon Arch Oyat

The opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has called on the government to ensure that all vehicles on Ugandan roads are in proper mechanical condition as part of efforts to curb the rising number of road accidents.

Speaking during a weekly party briefing at the UPC headquarters in Kampala, party spokesperson Arach Oyat Sharon expressed concern over what she described as the growing danger on major highways.

She warned that frequent road accidents are turning travel into “a nightmare,” attributing the risks to several factors.

Many highways are narrow and poorly maintained, while several road humps lack proper signage, and potholes are often left unrepaired, expanding into major hazards.

Arach also highlighted the mechanical state of vehicles, noting that some are unfit for long-distance travel yet continue operating, further increasing the likelihood of accidents.

She urged drivers to undergo professional training at recognized driving schools and called on traffic police to enhance mobility.

She recommended that officers patrol actively using vehicles and motorcycles instead of remaining stationed in fixed locations.
