Taxi Drivers Criticize Government Over Impounding of Old Vehicles

State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama,

Taxi drivers have criticized the government’s directive to immediately impound unroadworthy, old, and damaged taxis.

The order, issued by State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama, targets vehicles operating along the Kampala-Hoima route and other major corridors.

The move is part of a broader campaign to restore order, reduce accidents, and improve traffic flow in Kampala.

Byamukama explained that the directive responds to numerous complaints about unsafe vehicles and chaotic taxi operations.

However, Muhammad Ssempijja, a taxi driver and leader at Namayiba Taxi Park, said the move lacked goodwill because the government had not investigated why people continue to operate old vehicles.

He added that while it was important to streamline the transport sector, all stakeholders should be involved in generating ideas and setting guidelines.

Ssempijja urged the government to initiate dialogue with taxi drivers before implementing such measures.
