Government: Tax Exemptions Cannot Be Granted to All Businesses

Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi

Government has said it cannot extend tax exemptions and incentives to every business operator in the country.

The matter arose during a meeting of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee with the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury, Ramathan Ggoobi, who had been asked to explain the criteria used to grant tax exemptions to certain companies.

Ggoobi told the committee that tax incentives are only available to businesses that meet specific conditions set by government, noting that the exemptions cannot be granted to all companies. He urged Ugandans to fulfill their tax obligations, warning that businesses that fail to pay taxes risk being closed.

However, the committee, chaired by Gorreth Namugga, directed the PSST to submit a list of companies that have benefited from the tax exemptions and incentives.
