Government Warns Media Against Hosting Defeated Opposition Politicians

Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi

The government has issued a stern warning to media houses against hosting opposition politicians who lost in the recently concluded elections.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre on Tuesday, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, said some of the defeated candidates have “lost control of their senses” and are using media platforms to incite the public, which he described as detrimental to national unity.

Dr. Baryomunsi urged media owners and talk show hosts to exercise vigilance and avoid steering their stations into confrontation with the government and the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the industry regulator.

He reiterated the government’s position that any politician or political actor dissatisfied with the election results should seek legal redress through the courts rather than airing grievances through the media.

Looking ahead, the minister noted that the government is preparing for the Local Council One (LC1) elections. He added that the Electoral Commission is expected to announce the polling dates in due course.
