Police Urge Parents to Prioritize Learner Safety as Schools Reopen

Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke

The Uganda Police Force has urged parents and guardians to prioritize the safety of learners as schools reopen for the first term tomorrow.

At the weekly security press briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke said that child safety is a shared responsibility among parents, schools, transport operators, and other stakeholders.

ACP Rusoke advised parents to escort young children, particularly those in lower primary and girls, to and from school whenever possible, citing reported cases of defilement and child disappearances.

He also discouraged early morning and late evening movements, encouraging learners to use main roads and walk in groups.

Police further recommended that parents monitor what children carry to school to prevent possession of dangerous objects, drugs, or alcohol. On health matters, ACP Rusoke advised parents to share children’s medical information with schools to avoid emergencies and disputes.

He also highlighted recurring conflicts over school feeding and transportation, including cases of overloading school vehicles, stressing the need for cooperation to ensure learner safety throughout the term.
