UYD Opposes Government Move to Evict Traders and Boda Bodas from Kampala Streets

Street vendors to vacate the Kampala city streets

The Uganda Younger Democrats (UYD) have opposed the government’s decision to remove traders, boda boda riders, and taxis from the streets of Kampala.

Last week, the Minister of Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, issued a two-week ultimatum for street vendors to vacate the city streets, warning that strict enforcement would resume after the grace period and that anyone resisting would be arrested and charged.

UYD President Emeritus Ismaily Kirya urged the government to implement alternative measures before taking such a drastic step, noting that the eviction could negatively affect the social and economic well-being of those affected.

Kirya added that the government should avoid politicizing the issue and instead develop proper plans for people working in Kampala.

He emphasized that while development is necessary, it should be pursued in ways that do not harm livelihoods or disrupt the community.
