UPC’s Fred Jalameso Defeats NRM’s Obua in Ajuri County, Ending 15-Year Parliamentary Tenure

UPC's Fred Jalameso wins Ajuri County

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) candidate Fred Jalameso has successfully ended the parliamentary reign of National Resistance Movement (NRM) heavyweight Denis Hamson Obua in Ajuri County.

Obua, who has served as the Government Chief Whip, first entered Parliament in 2006 as the representative for the Northern Uganda Youth constituency.

He later became the Member of Parliament for Ajuri County following its creation in 2011, holding the position until now.

In the repeat election conducted on Tuesday across 17 polling stations in Awei Sub-county and one polling station in Abako Sub-county, alongside results from the 160 polling stations in the January 15 elections, Jalameso emerged victorious with 16,336 votes.

His closest contender, the incumbent Obua, garnered 15,568 votes. Michael Olobo, the Returning Officer, officially declared Jalameso the winner of the Ajuri County parliamentary seat.

UPC party president Jimmy James Michael Akena praised the victory as a powerful demonstration of people’s will and congratulated the people of Ajuri for standing firm in their decision.

In a statement released on January 28, 2026, Obua conceded defeat, marking the end of his 15-year tenure in Parliament.

He expressed gratitude to the people of Ajuri for the opportunity to serve, congratulated his successor Fred Jalameso, and accepted the outcome of the January 27 re-run election ordered by the Electoral Commission.

Other candidates in the race included Emmanuel Ongom Okwel of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), who secured 2,874 votes, as well as independent candidates Tom Jasper Molo and Steven Omara, who received 1,585 and 519 votes respectively.
