Minister Ogwang Raises Alarm Over Shs60 Billion Funding Gap for AFCON Operational Costs

Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang

The Minister of State for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has expressed concern over an unfunded priority of Shs60 billion required to cover operational costs ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

While appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports, Ogwang highlighted that, despite significant progress in infrastructure development for the tournament, there remains a critical funding gap for the operational expenses associated with the event.

Ogwang clarified that the required funds would be used to manage daily operations throughout the tournament, from its kickoff to the final match.

Uganda, alongside other East African nations, is set to co-host AFCON this year, with matches scheduled to take place at various venues, including Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, and Hoima Stadium, among others.
