UPDF Denies Hunting NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi

Deputy Spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Col. Chris Magezi

The Deputy Spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Col. Chris Magezi, has dismissed claims that the army is hunting for National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Col. Magezi made the clarification while appearing before Parliament’s Defence Committee, following concerns raised by Members of Parliament over allegations that security agencies were pursuing Kyagulanyi even after the conclusion of the elections.

He told the committee that the UPDF currently has no issue with the NUP president and emphasized that the army is not pursuing him.

Magezi added that if the UPDF had intended to arrest Kyagulanyi, it would have already done so, noting that the army has the capacity to apprehend anyone within Uganda.

Col. Magezi further revealed that security agencies are fully aware that Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu slept at his home, stressing that had there been any intention to arrest him, it would already have been carried out.

He also refuted allegations that the opposition is deliberately blocked from holding rallies at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, explaining that the venue operates on a booking system and is allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
