The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has unveiled plans to construct a glass bridge at the top of Murchison Falls National Park as part of efforts to boost tourism in the country.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, Tourism, and Industry, UWA Commissioner for Tourism and Business Development, Dorcus Rukundo, revealed that a concession agreement has been signed with the Chinese firm Tan Tang Group to implement the project at a cost of USD 20 million.
Rukundo explained that the project plan has already been approved by the UWA Board, and that the investor will initially fund the project and later recoup costs from visitors touring the glass bridge.
She added that Uganda will also receive an annual concession fee, which will be agreed upon at a later date.
The glass bridge forms part of a mega infrastructure development project in the tourism sector worth USD 28.5 million.
Rukundo further presented a proposal requesting UGX 10 billion in the next financial year for the purchase of a new helicopter.
The aircraft would support UWA activities such as wildlife surveillance, patrolling, animal rescue, ecological monitoring, and census operations across the country’s game parks.
