UCC Warns Media Against Broadcasting Unverified Election Results

UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has warned media houses against airing election results that have not been officially verified by the Electoral Commission.

Speaking to journalists at the Uganda Media Centre today, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo said broadcasting results announced at polling stations without verification from the Electoral Commission will not be permitted.

Nyombi noted that over the past two to three days, there has been widespread misinformation related to the elections, which the government is not prepared to tolerate.

When journalists questioned why media outlets are restricted from announcing provisional results released by presiding officers at polling stations, Nyombi said he would first consult the UCC legal department for further guidance on the matter.

Addressing concerns about a possible internet shutdown on polling day, Nyombi clarified that the government has no intention of shutting down the internet.

He further explained that only three entities consumers, the government, and internet service operators have the mandate to lodge complaints regarding improper use of the internet, adding that so far, no formal complaints have been received.
