High Court Defers Ruling in Ssekikubo’s Election Petition Against Rwashande

Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo

The High Court in Kampala has deferred to tomorrow the ruling on Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo’s request to file an election petition out of time, challenging the nomination of his political rival, Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande.

Presiding Judge Joyce Kavuma, who had been expected to deliver the ruling today, said the submissions were filed late last night at around 2:30 a.m., prompting her to postpone the decision to allow adequate time to review the documents.

She informed Ssekikubo, his lawyer Humphrey Tumwesigye, and lawyers representing the Electoral Commission that the ruling will instead be delivered electronically tomorrow.

The delay has angered Ssekikubo, who criticized the Principal Judge, Justice Jane Frances Abodo, for transferring his case from the High Court in Masaka to Kampala.

Brigadier General Emmanuel Rwashande is the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer for Lwemiyaga County. Ssekikubo is challenging his nomination on the grounds that Rwashande allegedly lacks the required academic qualifications and did not receive support from the required number of registered voters from Lwemiyaga.

Ssekikubo initially petitioned the Electoral Commission to annul Rwashande’s nomination. The Commission dismissed the complaint on 8th December 2025 and upheld Rwashande’s nomination, prompting Ssekikubo to appeal to the High Court.

Since the appeal was filed outside the legally stipulated five-day period, Ssekikubo is now asking the court to validate and admit his petition despite the delay. The High Court is expected to deliver its ruling tomorrow.

End.
