The Christmas season continues to bring joy across Uganda, as people from all walks of life share in the festive spirit.
This year, the Uganda Prisons Service has slaughtered nearly 1,000 animals including 533 cows and over 400 goats and sheep to mark its annual Christmas celebrations for staff, their families, and inmates.
Frank Baine, spokesperson for the Uganda Prisons Service, said the initiative ensures that all 269 prisons nationwide receive meat.
For those, who do not consume beef or goat meat, alternative provisions of chicken or turkey have been arranged according to Baine.
Baine explained that while many Ugandans travel to their villages to celebrate with family, prisoners remain in custody and staff continues their duties.
The initiative, he added, is part of Commissioner General Dr. Johnson Byabashaija’s efforts to give back and ensure everyone can partake in the holiday celebrations.
Each recipient receives an average of at least five kilograms of meat, underscoring the service’s commitment to staff welfare and humane treatment of inmates during the festive season.
