IRCU Urges Electoral Commission to Allow Voters Remain Near Polling Stations Ahead of 2026 Elections

Chairperson of the IRCU Council of Presidents, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu

The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) has advised the Electoral Commission not to force voters away from polling stations after they have cast their ballots during the general elections scheduled for 15 January 2026.

Speaking on behalf of the IRCU Council of Presidents, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, the Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, said existing laws already regulate voters’ presence around polling stations and should be respected to ensure peace.

He noted that the law allows voters to remain at least 20 metres away from polling stations, a provision he said is sufficient to maintain order.

Archbishop Kazimba strongly condemned the recurring acts of violence that often characterise election periods in Uganda, including bloodshed, intimidation, and the beating of opposition supporters.

He said such incidents undermine the credibility of the electoral process and threaten national stability.

He also called for discipline and professionalism among security forces as they carry out their duties during the election period.

The Archbishop warned that kidnappings and the detention of individuals without clear justification damage the reputation of both the government and security agencies.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Kazimba condemned the arrest of Fr. Deusdedit Ssekabira of Masaka Diocese, calling for his immediate release. He added that if the priest has a case to answer, it should be handled through proper legal channels.
