Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Türkiye has been described as an opportunity to “revive” the spirit of Vatican II
Bishop Paolo Bizzeti, former Apostolic Vicar of Anatolia, says Pope’s visit is a“mosaic” of different religious communities.
Pope Leo will be taking his first apostolic journey from 27th to 30th November 2025, to Türkiye, where Christians are a small minority.
His visit will take him to Ankara, Istanbul, and İznik, once known as Nicaea, for the 1700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council.
Bishop Paolo Bizzeti says the visit will bring the closeness of the Good Shepherd but also give meaning to the history of Turkiye — where Christianity was born in Antioch, on the Orontes, in the 1st century AD.
Bishop Paolo Bizzeti, who served as president of Caritas Türkiye from 2019 until just a few days ago, still cherishes that interreligious collaboration as one of the most meaningful experiences of his many years in the country.
