Chaos Erupts at Kampala High Court as Mariam Lutale Protests Denial of Treason Case Suspension

COURT

Tensions flared at the Kampala High Court today as Mariam Lutale, the daughter of Dr. Kiza Besigye’s co-accused, Hajji Obedi Lutale, disrupted a court session in protest.

The uproar followed the court’s decision to deny a request to suspend the treason trial against the accused individuals.

The protest occurred immediately after Trial Judge Emmanuel Baguma ruled against referring the case to the Constitutional Court for interpretation.

The judge deemed there was insufficient basis for such a referral.

In response, Mariam Lutale stormed the front of the courtroom, accusing the judge of bias in the proceedings.

Security personnel quickly intervened, restraining Lutale and arresting her.

She is currently being held in the court’s detention cells.

The accused individuals, Dr. Besigye, Hajji Obedi Lutale, and Captain Denis Ola, have been in custody since November of last year.

They face charges of treason related to alleged activities in Kenya, Greece, and Switzerland between 2023 and November 2024.

Following the chaotic scenes, the court ruled that the accused would remain in remand at Luzira Prison until the next hearing scheduled for December 4, 2025.
