Prime Minister Nabbanja Visits Flooded Kampala Arcades After Heavy Rains, Assesses Traders’ Losses

Prime Minister Nabbanja Visits Flooded Kampala Arcades

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has launched an urgent tour of Kampala’s flood-stricken trading hubs, following a heavy downpour on Friday, October 31st, that left extensive damage in its wake.

The torrential rains led to severe flooding near the ongoing Nakivubo Channel construction site, submerging several nearby arcades.

Basement shops were inundated with muddy water, destroying merchandise and forcing power outages for safety reasons.

Local traders have reported losses running into billions of shillings, attributing the flooding to the ongoing drainage works around the Nakivubo water channel, which is being overseen by prominent city businessman Hamis Kiggundu, commonly known as Ham.

Accompanied by City Minister Hajjit Minsa Kabanda and KCCA Executive Director Sharifah Buzeki, Prime Minister Nabbanja visited several affected arcades, including Ssekaziga, Tatala, Qualicell, and Nabukeera. During the visit, she spoke directly with traders to assess the full extent of the damages.

Nabbanja assured the traders that she would take their concerns to President Museveni, who had instructed her to carry out the on-site assessment.

The Prime Minister also revealed that an assessment team would be deployed to evaluate the damages and determine the best course of action to support the affected traders.
